Gradual Exposure for Water Anxiety Using ERP

Rediscover Comfort Around Water

Water can feel unpredictable and for some, even a simple boat ride or a walk along the shore can trigger tension, worry, or dread. If you’ve started avoiding lakes, oceans, pools, or boating activities, you’re not alone and it’s not a personal failing.

We guide you in rebuilding trust with water at your own pace. Our program is hands-on and supportive, helping you gradually experience:

  • Being near water without panic

  • Sitting on a docked boat or standing at the water’s edge

  • Taking short rides on calm water

  • Enjoying longer outings, when you feel ready

Through gentle, structured exercises and real-world experiences, you’ll learn ways to manage anxious thoughts and sensations, regain confidence, and approach water with a sense of control.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy a boating adventure, a family vacation, or simply feel safe by the water again, our approach helps you take practical steps toward feeling comfortable and confident, without pressure or judgment.

Our Story

My Connection to Water and Why I Created This Program

Being on the water has been part of my family for three generations. From early mornings fishing with loved ones to quiet moments on calm lakes, water has always been a source of healing, connection, and peace. I also personally know what it’s like to struggle with water-related anxiety—several family members have experienced intense fear or avoidance around boats, deep water, or even swimming. Seeing how these fears can limit experiences and affect quality of life inspired me to create a program that supports people safely and gradually.

Understanding Water-Related Anxiety

Many people experience fear or discomfort around water, but when that fear becomes intense, persistent, and limiting, it may qualify as a specific phobia — a common type of anxiety disorder. Research shows that roughly 7–12.5% of adults in the U.S. experience a specific phobia each year, and about 1 in 8 adults may develop one in their lifetime (NIMH).

  • Thalassophobia – An overwhelming fear of large or deep bodies of water, such as oceans, seas, or deep lakes. Often includes anxiety about what lies beneath the surface, fear of the unknown, or feeling out of control (Verywell MindForbes).

  • Aquaphobia – A broader fear of any water, from pools and rivers to lakes and showers. Both thalassophobia and aquaphobia can trigger intense anxiety, panic symptoms, and avoidance behaviors.

While exact numbers for thalassophobia are limited, it’s clear that water-related fears can significantly impact life, from limiting vacations and boating trips to avoiding simple recreational activities.

Evidence-Based Support

Using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), an evidence-based approach to help participants:

  • Gradually face water-related fears in a safe, guided environment

  • Build confidence and coping skills

  • Reduce avoidance and anxiety over time

This step-by-step program is designed to help you reclaim the freedom and joy that water can bring, whether it’s a calm lake, a short boating trip, or a day at the beach.

Does this sound like you?

  • You’ve been avoiding experiences like cruises, boat trips, or waterfront activities and don’t want your fear to keep holding you back.

  • There are experiences you’ve been putting off like cruises or boat outings and you’re ready to start working toward them.

  • You’re tired of missing out on opportunities involving the water and want to feel more free and confident saying yes.

If this resonates with you, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
