Our StoryMy Connection to Water and Why I Created This Program
Being on the water has been part of my family for three generations. From early mornings fishing with loved ones to quiet moments on calm lakes, water has always been a source of healing, connection, and peace. I also personally know what it’s like to struggle with water-related anxiety—several family members have experienced intense fear or avoidance around boats, deep water, or even swimming. Seeing how these fears can limit experiences and affect quality of life inspired me to create a program that supports people safely and gradually.
Understanding Water-Related Anxiety
Many people experience fear or discomfort around water, but when that fear becomes intense, persistent, and limiting, it may qualify as a specific phobia — a common type of anxiety disorder. Research shows that roughly 7–12.5% of adults in the U.S. experience a specific phobia each year, and about 1 in 8 adults may develop one in their lifetime (NIMH).
Thalassophobia – An overwhelming fear of large or deep bodies of water, such as oceans, seas, or deep lakes. Often includes anxiety about what lies beneath the surface, fear of the unknown, or feeling out of control (Verywell Mind, Forbes).
Aquaphobia – A broader fear of any water, from pools and rivers to lakes and showers. Both thalassophobia and aquaphobia can trigger intense anxiety, panic symptoms, and avoidance behaviors.
While exact numbers for thalassophobia are limited, it’s clear that water-related fears can significantly impact life, from limiting vacations and boating trips to avoiding simple recreational activities.
Evidence-Based Support
The Wavering Waters Program uses Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), an evidence-based approach to help participants:
Gradually face water-related fears in a safe, guided environment
Build confidence and coping skills
Reduce avoidance and anxiety over time
If any of the following sounds like you…
You’ve been avoiding experiences like cruises, boat trips, or waterfront activities and don’t want your fear to keep holding you back.
You want to enjoy things like cruises, fishing trips, or time on the water, but anxiety has been getting in the way.
There are experiences you’ve been putting off—like cruises or boat outings—and you’re ready to start working toward them.
You’re tired of missing out on opportunities involving the water and want to feel more free and confident saying yes.
Then Here’s What to Expect.
Our program helps soon-to-be sailors gradually build confidence on and around the water through a supportive, step-by-step approach.
Preparation Session
Begin with a virtual or in-person session where you’ll learn about anxiety, develop coping strategies, and prepare for the experience ahead.Getting Comfortable Near the Water
